Stormy is in a mandatory parent-participation school, and early in the parent training, they asked us, "what are your goals for your child's education?" I was shocked that I'd never really thought about it, given what an important responsibility it is for a parent. I have an answer, but before I give it, know that I care foremost about their happiness, and I love them unconditionally, and the goals I'm laying out here are nearly unachievable. I hope to do as much myself.
to be a Visionary Leader Joyfully Realizing Meaningful change
This is derived from an aphorism I've taken to heart: happiness is the exercise of vital powers alongs lines of excellence in a life affording them scope.
I've capitalized the letters of the words that give a key for the kinds of skills I'm trying to instill in my kids:
- Visionary: this requires creative skills. There are many: Curiosity, Love of novelty, Love of adventure, Synthesis, Composition, etc.
- Leader: this requires people skills: Respect for diversity, Sense of justice, Persuasion, Empathy, Conflict resolution, Sharing, Team play, Reading body language, by extension Reading a room, How to join, Being a good winner, Being a good loser, Being articulate, Punctuality, Some expertise.
- Joyfully: to do this, you need self-skills.
- Realizing: productive skills. Delayed gratification, time management.
- Meaningful change: they need the philosophical skills necessary to create their own value system.
